Gemwell company celebrate Dragon Boat Festival in restaurant together!
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
This festival is to commemorate the death of QU Yuan, an upright and honest poet and statesman.
The Dragon Boat Festival has been listed as a national holiday since 2008.
In May 2006, the state council listed it on the first national intangible cultural heritage list.
In September 2009, UNESCO formally considered and approved China’s Dragon Boat Festival as one of the world’s intangible cultural heritage, making it the first Chinese festival to be included in the world intangible heritage list.
Traditional food special for this festival —-Zongzi
Qu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 BC. Since ancient times, Chinese people threw into the water dumpling make of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves on the day. Therefore the fish would eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating Zongzi.
